Your Questions, Answered

  • The initial consultation involves a free 20 minute video or phone call. During the call I’ll ask you a few questions about your difficulties and what support you are looking for. We can then decide whether one of the one of the therapies I offer might be helpful for you. It’s also a chance for you to talk to me and see if I might be a good fit for you and to ask me any questions. You don’t have to commit to anything there and then, you can go away and have a think about it and get back in touch if you’d like to go ahead and book an appointment.

  • Most sessions last 50 minutes, 90 minute sessions are sometimes needed for memory processing work involved in treating PTSD.

  • CBT and ACT are short to mid-term therapies and most people tend to need between 6-20 sessions, however, there can sometimes be exceptions to this.

  • You can attend the first session without preparing anything beforehand, however it can help to think about what your main problems are and what you’d like to get out of therapy.

  • The first few sessions generally involve assessing your current difficulties and creating a shared understanding of what might be keeping them going. We then move on to treatment sessions where we introduce practical strategies to help you make changes. Treatment sessions usually involve a review of the past week and any home tasks, continuing with learning and practicing strategies and setting up new home tasks. Sessions will follow this structure loosely but we can be flexible with this to meet your unique needs.

Therapy sessions with me are not overly formal or clinical, please wear comfy clothes and bring a drink and snacks if you’d like.

  • Absolutely not! It’s my job to ask you questions (which you will know the answer to) to help you understand yourself better.

  • Therapy will involve talking and thinking about things that are upsetting, and so sometimes people do feel a bit worse before they start to feel better. This is completely normal and I will provide you with tools to help you to manage this.
